Majorca

Majorca - or Mallorca, whatever way you prefer to spell it, and whatever way you wish to pronounce it, is the largest of Balearic Islands, and along with its sister islands of Menorca and Ibiza, lies in the Mediterranean Sea off the south east coast of mainland Spain. Flying time from most UK airports is around 2 – 2 1/2 hours and on arrival local time is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. Since the onset of mass tourism in the 1960's, Mallorca has without doubt, been one of the most popular holiday destinations for British holidays makers, offering a wide range of attractions to suit all tastes. As a generalisation, the resorts on the islands south coast are the lively ones and perhaps more suited for groups of young singles, or those seeking an active nightlife. We have picked a few of the more popular resorts below:

Palma Nova/Magaluf: the hugely popular resort of Palma Nova and its nearest neighbour Magaluf are the largest resort developments and are situated on the south west coast of the island, 10 miles west of the Capital Palma and the Airport. One of big selling points of Palma Nova is the airport transfer; effectively you can land at the airport, collect your luggage, and check into your hotel in around an hour. During the summer, both Palma Nova and Magaluf are more suited for those looking for an active, action packed holiday, and are certainly not suitable for long lazy days on the beach, followed by a quiet relaxing drink in the evening. Whatever your preconception of Palma Nova is, the reality is either better or far worse than you can ever imagine.

Alcudia: If the frantic resorts in the south of the island are not to your taste, then Alcudia on the north coast of Majorca may be the place you are looking for to spend your next family holiday. The warm shallow waters of Alcudia Bay make this resort very popular with families with young children, and the beach is without doubt a major attraction with fine, clean sand with a wide variety of water sport and other facilities available to suit all tastes. Whatever part of the beach you choose; you will never be more than a few hundred metres from the nearest beach bar or cafe.

Cala Millor: The modern resort of Cala Millor is on the islands rugged east coast. The resort is without doubt the largest tourist development along the east coast, Most of Majorca's east coast is dotted with tiny creeks and coves, however, the beach at Cala Millor stretches for more than 6km along a wide sheltered bay which is protected by two large unspoilt headlands. The nearby resort of Cala Bona, which effectively is now almost becoming part of the Cala Millor development, can be easily reached by a walk along the new promenade to the north. Although Cala Millor has a quite a wide appeal, it is still perhaps more suited towards the traditional family holiday.
